Girl meets world

Above my desk in the newsroom hangs an autographed photo of William Daniels, also known as Mr. George Feeny. It is personalized with his “best wishes.”
I watched a lot of “Boy Meets World” growing up. Anytime Disney or ABC Family aired reruns, I would be right there in front of the television waiting to bust a gut over my favorite funny moments or tear up at the heartbreaking events.
Thankfully I purchased the first three seasons on DVD before they were discontinued. Lionsgate acquired the rights to the show a few years ago, and while there are rumors of a season four release on DVD in fall of this year, nothing has officially been announced.
I’m holding out hope, and in doing this, I’ve decided to share some of my favorite “Boy Meets World” moments with you.
I truly believe I’ve learned more about life, love and friendship from Cory Matthews and the gang than from anywhere else. (Okay, my family gets top billing, but Cory is a close second!)
• Start your day off with breakfast
“There is no such thing as good news before I’ve had my Grapenuts,” Cory told Shawn in a season three episode of the series.
• Love is great…
Shawn explains it best. “It’s even better if you love someone who likes you better than you like her, because then she’ll pay for stuff. And if she’s paying? Love is way cool.”
• …But sometimes it gets hard
“I believe in love like I believe in God,” Cory tells Shawn in season seven. “You can’t see it, you can’t touch it, but you know it’s there because you can feel its wrath.”
• College is serious business
Eric: “We’re being judged on a whole new level. Theories and footnotes, shades of meaning, nuance, spelling - where does it end?”
• Fighting with roommates is normal
Eric and Jack have their share of differences in season five. “Same old story, sure you heard it a thousand times. She’s a witch, she talks to the devil and apparently I’m standing between her and the doorway to hell.”
• Friendship wins in the end
Just one of many lessons from Mr. Feeny: “Friendship, for example, is a real gift. It’s given with no expectations and no gratitude is needed, not between real friends.”
• Marriage is a partnership
Topanga lays down the law: “Do you know why a husband talks to his wife before doing something? So she can tell him what a stupid idea it is.”
Obviously I could not touch on all of the great moments, so feel free to share your favorite Cory and Shawn bromance quotes or George Feeny lessons, either by e-mail or at thenews.org.
