Volleyball season ends at hands of JSU

            The volleyball team ended its OVC championship campaign with a 3-1 loss to Jacksonville State University Friday.
            The Racers entered their second game of the championship by gaining a two-point lead over the Gamecocks that the Racers held on to and extended, creating an 11-3 lead. JSU battled back, regaining the serve, but not managing to keep it, allowing the Racers to maintain their lead without a challenge until late in the first set. With the score at 7-18 the Gamecocks took temporary control of the game, tying the score at 22 points after a series of point runs. The Racers would not allow them a win, ending the game with a score of 25-23.
            The Gamecocks refused to be beaten and battled back from their first loss early in the second game, gaining a two-point lead on the Racers. JSU maintained their lead late into the game, although the Racers regained the serve and gained several points over the Gamecocks. The Racers’ chance in the second game ended with a five-point run from the Gamecocks, which put the score at 14-18. The Racers managed to tied the score 20, but the Gamecocks ended the game with another five-point run pushing the score to 20-25.
            The Racers tallied the first points of the third game, gaining a three-point lead over the Gamecocks, which was immediately tied by JSU. From there the two teams battled for every point , the back-and-forth point exchange ending when JSU gained a 6-1 run over the Racers which put the Gamecocks five points ahead. The Racers regained the serve with the score at 22-13, and gaining a three-point run, but the Gamecocks ended the game with a score of 19-25.
            JSU came into the final game ready to make an end and started the game with an 8-2 run, putting the Racers six points behind the Gamecocks. Although the Racers had several runs of their own, the Gamecocks kept them in check, keeping a healthy lead over the Racers and ending the game with a score of 18-25 and the match 1-3, ending the Racers 2009 season.
            The Racers ended their season with a 13-18 overall record and an 11-7 record in the OVC.
