The students running for Student Government Association vice president this year claim to demonstrate leadership, responsibility and experience in SGA.
Jonathan Jones, junior from Frankfort, Ky., will use his people skills and personality to win the vice president position, he said.
“I get along well with others on the Campus Activities Board where I began as a one of three publicity chairpersons my sophomore year,” Jones said. “I am also able to motivate people, which is a beneficial quality in a vice president.”
Jones started working with SGA during his freshman year, and this year he is currently a publicity chair and Executive Chief-of-Staff to SGA President Kara Mantooth.
“I learned a lot as Kara’s chief-of-staff,” Jones said. “I got to include my ideas and input in various SGA matters.”
Jones said he wants to advertise CAB positions and make them more accessible to more students.
“I want to be able to see a huge influx in CAB applications,” Jones said. “There are 13 Chairs on CAB, and each chairperson hosts different activities on campus, such as bands and innovative acts.”
Robin Phelps, junior from Cape Girardeau, Mo., said she is running for vice president because of her appreciation for Murray State’s student government. Her campaign includes SGA president candidate Jonathan Burdon, junior from Marion, Ky.
“For me, the position of vice president of SGA is the culmination of everything I’ve been taught and grown to like about Murray State’s student government,” Phelps said via e-mail. “I want to not only lead a group who coordinates the bulk of the University’s events, but lead that group in a well-organized, student-oriented fashion, which gives students a voice.”
Phelps said the main aspect of SGA she wants to push forward is a reform of organization within the governmental body.
“A collaborative, well-organized and unified effort on the part of CAB and SGA will promote student involvement, awareness of SGA and campus events and encourage and foster creativity and diversity,” Phelps said.
Phelps has been involved in many organizations and leadership positions in addition to SGA including Black Student Council and The Murray State News.
