The foreign language department and International Cultures and Languages Association, or ICALA, are holding a celebration of Cinco de Mayo today.
Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for the fifth of May and signifies the Mexican army’s defeat of the French army on May 5, 1862.
May 5 is not recognized as a national Mexican or American holiday, but many feel it should be, because they view the date as Mexico’s Independence Day from the French.
Although Cinco de Mayo is typically celebrated on May 5 each year, Susan Drake, associate professor of modern languages and head of the event, said finals week interfered with the date this year.
“We want to hold this celebration before finals week, which is why it is going to be on (May) first,” Drake said.
This year, Cinco de Mayo falls on Tuesday of finals week, so it not would not have been convenient for most students to attend.
The event will have a taco bar and a piñata and students outside the department are welcome to join, Drake said.
“We will be honoring our graduating seniors during the event,” Drake said.
The foreign language department and ICALA will also hand out awards to the graduating seniors, but the event will mainly be an end-of-the-year gathering for any who wants tacos and a good time.
“The main purpose for this event is so students can unwind before finals,” Drake said. “Depending on the weather, we will be expecting at least 30 students and the foreign language faculty will also be attending,” Drake said.
Shavonna Edwards, senior from Beaver Dam, Ky., became involved with ICALA during last year’s Cinco de Mayo celebration.
“It is a time to unwind before finals, and it is a lot of fun,” Edwards said.
She said ICALA works with Spanish language students, both majors and minors, as well as international students at Murray State.
The event will be held at the Creek Pavilion from 5-7 p.m. If it rains, it will be moved to the Stables. The event is free.
