Should homosexuals have the right to marry?
The multicultural, class and gender studies program will host a lecture on gay rights and marriage Wednesday in Faculty Hall room 208.
Sam Marcosson, law professor at the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville, will conduct the lecture.
Kevin Binfield, professor of English, philosophy, fine arts and humanities, and the lecture coordinator, said this is the second lecture in the lecture series established by the multicultural, class and gender studies program.
In the first lecture, Chris Trzepacz, an assistant biology professor, spoke about the biology of sexual identity.
Marcosson said Binfield contacted him to be the lecturer of this topic.
“I agreed to do this lecture because the topic of gay marriage is important, and I would like to address it to the community,” Marcosson said.
Because gay marriage inspires controversy, Marcosson said he is not sure how many people will attend the lecture.
“I believe the issue will draw a crowd,” Marcosson said.
Derrick Farlee, freshman from Paducah, Ky., said he did not believe in the right of gay marriage because of his religious background.
“I think being gay is against the Bible,” Farlee said. “If God wanted men to be married to men he would have made it that way.”
Although Farlee said he did not agree with gay marriage, he said everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
“When you are passionate about something you stand up for it,” Farlee said. “On this issue, people should stand up and feel strong about what side they are on.”
Anthony Jones, senior from Union City, Tenn., expressed an opposite viewpoint on the gay-marriage debate.
“I don’t think that people understand the real issue,” Jones said. “It is not really a religious issue, it’s not like we are asking people to hold religious ceremonies when we get married. I believe that religion and government should not mix. We just want to have to same rights as everyone else.”
Jones said he thinks the lecture will educate others on the topic and bring more understanding.
“When people are educated, I think it will help them become more open-minded toward the issue,” Jones said.
Marcosson said he will bring up the recent lawsuit in California on legalizing same-sex marriages to demonstrate when people should stand up for their viewpoints.
“I want people to know when to make the right arguments on this debate,” Marcosson said. “I will discuss the lawsuit in California (that was trying to ban this movement) and show how some states are taking the steps to legalizing these marriages.”
Marcosson said he would allow questions at the end of the lecture for anyone wanting clarification or to know.
He said he believed people would probably want to voice their opinions, which is important for such a controversial subject as gay marriage and gay rights.
“I know some people might want to discuss issues during my lecture, but I want them to wait until the end,” Marcosson said. “I am welcome to any questions.”

wants to wed legally, there should be a legal right to do so. If a certain church wants to deny a same-sex wedding, that is fine & completely up to an individual church. A Catholic priest will refuse to marry a Protestant male/female couple. Or a Buddhist male/female couple. And so on...Don't kid yourselves that marriage has not been redefined over & over again throughout history. At one time,
marrying for love was absurd. Stop looking for differences and start focusing on the similarities. We are all human and have the right for the
pursuit of happiness. Just because you don;t understand something, doesn't mean you should take away human
rights.
Air conditioning. Who are we to decide what temperature we live in? There's a reason we're the third planet from the sun and our unique positioning allows for differences in climate and season. We should just grin and bear it.Eye glasses. Obviously people with poor eyesight were meant to be handicapped from birth and should be eaten by a mountain lion.Modern medicine. If we get sick, it's just Mother Nature's way of reminding us how fragile we are. If we had any respect for the law of nature, we'd let sickness overcome us and just die. When it comes to the child-raising issue, I have a unique perspective. I work in child welfare and have seen too many (heterosexual) couples with 8 or 9 kids that they can't take care of. These kids grow up, have 8 or 9 kids of their own that they themselves take care of, and the cycle continues for generations and generations. Fertility is not a manifest destiny to fill up the Earth. In case we haven't noticed, the Earth is pretty full as it is. There are plenty of fertile people out there who have no business reproducing, because they have no desire, or in some cases no capacity, to be the kind of parents children deserve. But I guess if you look at it from a Darwinian point of view, they'll just die out from natural selection, right? Because life is just a science experiment in black and white.Gay people aren't promoting motherless and fatherless children. They want to PARENT motherless and fatherless children. There's a chronic shortage of suitable foster and adoptive parents in this country and state. So let gay people get married in the eyes of the law and end all this nonsense.
People pushing gay marriage keep saying this is a religious issue. That is not true. Everyone needs to answer the question of “What is the purpose of life?” Leaving religion out of the answer, as well as the Bible and personal opinions, there is only one answer that can be given that will satisfy the laws of NATURE. That answer is: “Reproduce yourself and your species.”Can two female or two male marriage partners conform to this law? No! So, this is not a religious issue alone. It is an issue that defies the laws of nature. The animal, bird, fish, insect, and plant kingdoms all live this law. They reproduce themselves as per nature's laws.If any of these kingdoms failed to live this law, their kingdom would become extinct in a short period of time. If the plant kingdom failed to live this law, there would be no food for man or animals to eat. We would soon become a dead planet.Only man wants to defy this law of nature. In so doing, they become destroyers of, rather than contributors to, the human race.Gay radicals are bent on re-defining marriage and society, thus changing the human experience. What they are promoting is motherless and fatherless children.
