2008 Woodie Awards
Taking a position to argue against pornography seems simple enough, but when someone is asked to defend this form of entertainment, you might find it is not so easy. Personally I'd rather not have a friend call me 30 years from now to tell me he saw my daughter on the latest "Girls Gone Wild" Video.
Somehow we've been conditioned to believe that pornography is a matter of free speech, personal freedom and privacy and that any restrictions would undo the First Amendment. People like Larry Flynt tell us that banning it could lead us down the wrong path.
"We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all." The words of the 1985 classic high school movie "The Breakfast Club" address themes of prejudice, judgment, humor and the everyday insanity of human interaction. Claire, Andrew, Bender, Brian and Allison are pegged as their own self-fulfilling stereotypes, as a beauty, a jock, a rebel, a brain and a recluse, respectively.
The staff editorial is the majority opinion of the editorial board of The Murray State News. Longtime Murray State staff members expect to retire from their positions in late 2008 because of the sheer expense of employment. Simply put, the state of Kentucky is cleaning house and pushing employees out to pasture sooner than expected.
I hate tests and I?especially hate the words gregarious, eleemosynary and conflagration. These words, and similar words in the never-spoken-in-the-real-world category, have appeared in about 50 of my dreams in the last month. Why, you ask? I've been preparing for the Graduate School Admissions test I took (and barely survived) Thursday.
