It is almost impossible to win a football game without running the football. This held true when the Racer defense held the Southeastern Missouri Redhawks to just four yards rushing in a 17-10 win. The Racers struck first on a 26-yard field-goal from freshman kicker Kienan Cullen after a 14 play, 66-yard drive by the Racer offense.
The Racers start the season with a tough test against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. The Racers started the game with a layup by Amber Guffey and followed it on the next possession with a three from Paige Guffey to go up 5-0. The Hilltoppers came back to tie the game at 7-7 with 15:31 left in the first half.
The Racers got off to a slow start in the first set down 3-1 but rallied and tied the game at three. The Skyhawks led by three 8-5 but the Racers used a 4-0 run to take the lead 9-8. The Skyhawks took a 20-14 advantage after some miscues from the Racers but after a timeout by Racer coach David Schwepker his team rallied and scored three straight points.
Murray State's soccer team watched its 2008 season end in a heartbreaking 5-4 shootout loss to Morehead State University Friday in the semi-final round of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament. The Racers, who led the OVC from the beginning of conference play, ended their season with a 12-5-3 record.
The Murray State rifle team will head to Jacksonville, Ala., this weekend to compete against some of the nation's premier rifle teams in the annual Gamecock Invitational hosted by the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.
