The fall semester is here again and this school year is proving to be bigger and better than last year's.

With more than 1,400 new freshmen, a 248-piece Racer Band and approximately 150 students living in New Clark College, the number of Murray State students appears to be larger than usual.

"All of the signs show we are up from last year," Don Robertson, vice president for Student Affairs, said.

According to Robertson, overall enrollment was up 506 students Aug. 11, in comparison to last year.

"There has been tremendous growth in the extended campuses," Robertson said. "Typically when the economy is bad, enrollment is up."

Not only do additional campuses and the economy contribute to the apparent enrollment increase, but efforts in recruitment.

"Everything we're seeing is telling us we're going to make some gains this year,"
University President Randy Dunn said.

Dunn said he never expected to see this amount of growth this early in the year.

Figures from an Aug. 8 report showed a 3 percent increase in full-time graduates with help from the incoming freshmen class.

The report also showed 7,550 full- and part-time undergraduate students and 9,060 pre-scheduled students overall.

Charlotte Bradshaw, administrative secretary for Enrollment Management, said these numbers are not final and do not reflect the anticipated sum of students enrolled for the semester. Final numbers will be avaliable in October.

"There's usually an upward trend," Bradshaw said.

Alison Marshall, executive director for Enrollment Management, said visible signs of Murray State's growth are the effects of positive reinforcement, encouragement and increasing recruitment techniques by undergraduate admission services and recruitment.

"The responsibility of every faculty, staff and student is to assist us with encouraging new students to attend MSU," Marshall said.

Murray State continues to show improvements not only in enrollment, but in other areas, recently receiveing the highest ranking by Forbes.com in a survey including 569 other Kentucky public institutions.
