Despite getting a season-high 21 hits, the Murray State Thoroughbreds fell to Southern Illinois University 14-11 at Johnny Reagan Field Wednesday afternoon. The 'Breds were led by junior infielders Cosy Hodskins and Tyler Owen, who went 4-4 from the plate respectively.
After a year of watching from the sidelines, senior javelin thrower Emi Yamamuro has changed the way the Murray State track and field team will look at javelin throwers for years to come. Before coming to Murray State, Yamamuro threw for her hometown university in Toyama, Japan.
With the final publication of the Murray State News for the 2007-08 academic year, my original plan for the sports column was to discuss highlights from some of the top games from sports teams this season. Unfortunately, plans have digressed due to the recent decision of the athletic department to discontinue the women's rowing team.
From water boarding to fencing and racquetball, there are currently 10 club sports offered at Murray State, and the numbers continue to grow. Three of these teams are making noticeable increases in both talent and student participation as they finish their 2007-2008 season.

Although Harper, a 6-foot-1-inch wide receiver, went undrafted in Saturday's NFL draft, the former Murray State offensive standout quickly signed a free agent contract with the Packers, according to a press release sent out Wednesday.
For many college students, "summer vacation" is anything but a leisurely time filled with endless days of recreational fun. Many will go home and work to replenish their bank accounts after a year of college costs has taken its toll. Some will serve as an intern to gain much-needed experience in their field and improve their resumes, and some will stay in Murray to take classes to expedite the road to graduation.
Women's equality was first officially recognized in 1920. Ever since, words like gender equality and Title 9 have been topics of care and consideration. Soon, Murray State University's athletic department will be re-evaluated on Title 9 to make sure the school still complies with the rule.
