Junior Franklyn McIntosh, a nursing major from Indianapolis, Ind., is running against the incumbent vice president, junior Derek Nance, a pre-med and biology major from Murray.
The job of the SGA vice president is primarily to run the Campus Activities Board and to assist the president when necessary.
McIntosh, who served as a senator-at-large this year, believes his age, 27, and his experience in other student governments make him more qualified for the job, he said.
"I think I've been through more things and I feel I am more universal than my opponent is," he said. "I also think I have more in common with the students, because he's really not other than being Greek."
Nance, who has served as a Cabbie, a senator-at-large and the vice president, said he puts more stock in his experience as the vice president.
"Last year, I beat the incumbent vice president, but if I could go back, I would vote for him," he said. "I know now that experience in this job is important, and I've learned a lot serving as vice president for a year."
Each of the candidates has ideas to improve SGA and Murray State as a whole.
More inclusiveness on campus is something McIntosh said he would like to see.
"Unfortunately, a lot of the races here don't intermingle," McIntosh said. "I would really like to see us become more of a community. With the amount of diversity that we have here, it's a shame that we aren't more together, but that's something I would like to work on."
He said he plans to use CAB as a way to achieve this through more diverse concerts and programming.
Nance would like to continue his work of giving students a stronger voice, he said.
"Last year my campaign involved giving students some more options," he said. "We kind of stuck to tradition this year - like we always have the hypnotist (at Great Beginnings), but next year we might try something different depending on what students really want."
Holding student forums would be a way to gauge student preferences, Nance said.
Both McIntosh and Nance are involved in other campus activities.
McIntosh is involved with the Marvin D. Mills Multicultural Center, is an academic team member and participates in recreational sports.
Nance is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, the commuter representative for Hester College Residential College Council, the vice president of the premedical club and a cartoonist for The Murray State News.
