The dance didn't last long for the women's basketball team.
Two weeks after winning a long-awaiting Ohio Valley Conference Championship, the No. 14-seeded Racers were defeated in the first round of the NCAA tournament by No. 3 Duke, 78-57, Sunday night.
The Racers were forced to fight through a relentless Duke press defense throughout the duration of the game. Despite successfully finding some open holes on offense, the Racers finished the game with a 34 percent shooting percentage, shooting 25 percent during the first half.
Junior Ashley Hayes led the team with 26 points.
"That No. 23 got the best of us, because we didn't do anything to stop her," Duke Head Coach Joanne McCallie said after the game. ... "I thought she was an excellent player."
Hayes also collected five rebounds, one behind senior Angela Brown who led the team with six. As a team, the Racers recorded 29 rebounds, while Duke notched 48.
Despite the disappointing finish, Head Coach Jody Adams said she was proud of her team's reaction to an unfamiliar situation. This year marked the team's first trip to the NCAA tournament.
"I have to give credit to the upperclassmen to be able to weather some storms and bring us together," Adams said. ... "I'm very proud of this team."
