Beshear presents state gambling proposal

Gov. Steve Beshear announced a proposal Thursday that would legalize casino gambling and establish 12 gaming facilities across the state. According to a press release from the governor's office, the proposal could generate $600 million of additional revenue a year after casinos are fully operating.

Shooter opens fire at Illinois school

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) _ A former student dressed in black walked onto the stage of a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University and opened fire on a packed science class Thursday, killing five students, wounding 16 and setting off a panicked stampede before committing suicide.

Student presidents aim for recognition

The Board of Student Body Presidents has represented the students of all major universities across Kentucky for years and is now trying to gain a legitimate status within the state government. Murray State Student Body President Eric King, who is part of the Board, explained it has been working vigorously on bill KRS 164.

Student organizations support tornado victims

After last week's turbulent weather, Murray State organizations have stepped up to support the students at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., after a tornado left the campus devastated. The tornado not only destroyed the women's dorms and collapsed buildings, but also put nine students in the hospital overnight and left many students without living necessities, according to a Union University spokesperson.

When Amanda Lovelace heard the emergency sirens during last week's storms, she didn't know what the warning signals were telling her. "It sounded like an emergency vehicle siren and not like a normal wailing tornado siren," Lovelace, junior from Paducah, Ky.

Dean's activities, talents diverse

Murray State students may have seen this dean of the humanities and fine arts department dashing through the campus on his bicycle, but Ted Brown is not the cyclist he may appear to be. Joking that he simply uses his bike for transportation to and from home a mile and a half away, Brown said his hobbies range from poker and knitting to playing tennis and traveling.

Services provide extra aid to students

For some students who need a little help to succeed in class, there is an organization on campus with the resources and willingness to help. Student Support Services is a federally funded program that offers assistance to first generation college students and those who receive federal financial aide or have a documented disability.
