A change in the way Murray State communicates will be in order within the next year as plans to purchase a mass notification system and voice-over Internet Protocol phone system are in the works. Hearing high-pitched sirens may be a thing of the past after the installation of two new systems to better notify students, faculty and staff during emergency situations.
The results of the science complex audit and possibly lowering tuition for international students are some of the topics the Murray State Board of Regents will discuss during its meeting today. The Regents requested an audit on the science complex during a September meeting to make sure all money is accounted for.
Ronnie England remembers the first Christmas he spent away from home. He was 19 years old, standing in the cold and snow while on guard duty in Germany. Another Christmas he was in Guantanamo Bay eating dinner, including runny stuffing with the consistency of oatmeal and store-bought pumpkin pie, prepared by Jamaicans and Filipinos.
The majority of incoming freshman worry about classes, roommates and homesickness. One student this year, however, was forced to worry about much more. David Long was a freshman from St. Louis, Mo., and a member of Clark College for just more than a week when he was told his melanoma had returned.

Getting into the holiday spirit during the last weeks of school is a struggle for many Murray State students as they prepare for finals.
Vice President for Student Affairs Don Robertson met with a committee this week to discuss future plans concerning the lawn shared by College Courts, Hester College and the planned Richmond Residential College. Among those who met to discuss the future of the green space along Waldrop Drive were Residential College Council presidents, college heads from Hester and Richmond Colleges, RCA President Allan Hendricks, Director of Facilities Design and Construction Kim Oatman and Director of Housing David Wilson.
Those wanting to learn about another culture while helping other students have several opportunities on campus. Murray State's Conversation Partner program pairs American students with an English as a Second Language student for one hour per week in order to help non-English speakers become more comfortable with American culture and to learn conversational English.
At a Homecoming football game years ago, the starting running back changed into a band uniform and played four different instruments during the halftime show. That was S.G. Carthell in high school, balancing the life of a successful athlete and an avid musician.
Last year, the athletic department won a championship that many people never recognized. Murray State athletic teams collected 12,372 non-perishable food items last December during a canned food drive competition among universities within the Ohio Valley Conference.
