For some Murray State students who survive mostly on food from Winslow Dining Hall, Fast Track and pizza delivery chains, a trip to Renfroe's Hihburger Inn can serve as a delicious refresher.
Ron Beaton, a junior from Kennett, Mo., said eating at Hihburger feels just like being at home.
"It's a good, local mom-and-pop restaurant, and it has the friendly atmosphere that is contagious here in Murray," he said.
Beaton said he got his first taste of Hihburger after church one Sunday upon a friend's recommendation, and it quickly became a part of his Sunday routine because he loves the fried chicken special.
"(The food) seemed to compliment God very well," Beaton said.
Husband and wife Rick and Dotty Renfroe own Hihburger and said they go to great lengths to keep the restaurant's home-cooked feel.
"The best way to get home-cooked taste is to do the home cooking," Renfroe said. "I cook like I cook for my family. I think of everyone as family and I treat them that way."
Hihburger serves daily specials like turkey and dressing and fried chicken on Sundays, fish on Fridays and ribs on Saturdays, among a variety of other specials and menu items.
The daily specials include a choice of one entrée and three sides. Each meal offers large portions accompanied by cheap prices.
The hamburgers, pork tenderloin and biscuits and gravy are a few of the most popular items.
"My secret is I don't have recipes," Renfroe said. "I go on taste which is why I work everyday because no one knows how to make it the way I like it."
Renfroe said she and her husband begin work at 2:30 a.m. every day to insure the food is prepared to perfection. Every item is made from scratch, including the hamburger meat, which they grind themselves.
"I'm afraid someone else won't put their heart and soul in it," Renfroe said.
The homey feel doesn't stop with the food in this small diner. The aroma of the daily specials and homemade cakes and pies greet customers in a room filled with friendly service and happy customers.
Renfroe said she brags she has the best crew of servers in town and the walls around the restaurant showcase each and every one of them - along with most of their families - in hanging portraits.
"It's not fancy but I want it to feel homey," Renfroe said. "I want to keep it as close to the family and the home environment as I can get it."
Hihburger is located at 413 S. 4th St. and is open from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Head to Hihburger for home cooking and a dining experience that will take you home to the dinner table.
Each month, The News will feature a different business or restaurant in Murray. If you would like to make a suggestion, e-mail Ashley Edwards at ashleyb.edwards@murraystate.edu.
