Alpha Omicron Pi sorority will host the 28th annual Mr. MSU Pageant Friday. The sorority uses this event to raise funds for the Arthritis Foundation and Juvenile Arthritis Foundation.
Kirby O’Donoghue, senior from Westview, Ky., said the sorority raised more than $7,000 in last year’s pageant.
“We are very grateful and honored for what the community has done to support us,” O’Donoghue said. “Likewise, this year our goal is to continue producing such an exquisite pageant that we raise just a little more to support the good works of the Arthritis Foundation and the Juvenile Arthritis Foundation.”
Each year, Mr. MSU features a theme, which O’Donoghue said has ranged from “The Blues Brothers” to “New York” to “Hair Spray.” This year, the theme is “It’s Raining Men,” based on the 1982 song by The Weather Girls. O’Donoghue said participants will perform wearing rain boots and carrying umbrellas.
All official clubs and organizations were given the opportunity to nominate a candidate for Mr. MSU from within their groups.
Throughout the evening the candidates, representing different ages, majors and talents, will compete for their place in pageant history.
Contestants will be interviewed by the pageant’s four judges: Heather Hall, alumna and former Mrs. Kentucky, Dan Hall, a former judge of Miss Kentucky pageants, Jane Mckee from AOPi headquarters and Whitney Shirley, AOPi alumna and former Mr. MSU director. The judging covers four criteria: interview, talent, formal wear and stage presence.
Awards are presented for fourth place, third place, runner-up and first place, as well as separate awards for Mr. Congeniality and Best Legs.
Marteze Hammonds, past Mr. MSU winner and alumnus, said the AOPi women do a good job organizing this philanthropic event.
“The night allows some of (Murray State’s) male leaders to express themselves via an interview, a talent and a stage competition,” Hammonds said. “There are some really talented guys on campus and you can find them all at Mr. MSU.”
The pageant begins at 7 p.m. Friday in Lovett Auditorium. Tickets are $7 at the door.
