Pink rain boots with splashes of orange and yellow securely held a dozen roses on my office desk Valentine’s Day my freshman year. The thoughtful yet practical gift helped me conquer the lakes and rivers that flood Murray State’s campus on a weekly basis.
Students probably will not find rain boots named on any “freshmen essentials” list, but if you have ever walked to class on a rainy day and experienced the annoyance of wet socks, rain boots aren’t just a fashion accessory, they are a must-have.
Many local stores have gotten the memo about the rain boot dilemma, but living in Murray gives students few options when it comes to style.
If students choose to shop locally, matching rain boots with your sorority jacket or umbrella or locating a pair similar to those of the girl in your math class may be an impossible shopping challenge.
Thankfully, with just one click of the mouse, you can have access to thousands of styles with a range of prices. From mid-calf to knee high, ankle to even high-heel, there is a style for everyone.
Emily Bebout, freshman from Salem, Ky., said she loves the colorful rain boots she received for Christmas when she was 14 from Kohls.
“Rain boots are the only thing you can wear and actually be comfortable when it rains,” Bebout said. “If you wear tennis shoes they get soaked, and if you wear sandals your feet get all wet and dirty.”
Web sites such as zappos.com and target.com offer dozens of patterns and fashions. Ranging from approximately $25 for Target rain boots to more than $200 for designer Burberry boots, there are selections for all price ranges.
Next to cost, the pattern often decides which rain boots one will purchase. With zebra print, polka dots, hearts, flowers, snake skin, classic colors, skull and cross bones, graphic images, stripes, horses and anchors, whatever your preference, rain boots can match any unique style.
Laura Schaumburg, junior from Metropolis, Ill., said she bought her black and white polka-dot rain boots a few weeks into her freshman year at Murray State.
Schaumburg said she loves that her rain boots match different outfits and keep her looking bright in the gloomy rain.
“Having to walk from class to class, building to building, can be a disaster on campus,” Schaumburg said. “Rain boots keep your feet and pants from getting soaked.”
Schaumburg said if there was one extra feature she wishes her rain boots possessed, it would be the ability to teleport throughout campus or de-frizz her hair on a rainy day.
“Rain in Murray is a problem,” Schaumburg said. “It’s impossible to survive the puddles and flooding without (rain boots).”
Rain boots are not the only rainy day accessory. Umbrellas, rain jackets and ponchos are also popular items on Murray State’s campus. Luckily for students, these items can be found at the University bookstore.
