‘The Breakfast Club,’ written and directed by John Hughes, will show this weekend as part of Maiden Alley Cinema’s tribute.

On Aug. 6, director/writer/producer John Hughes died at age 59. After the news of his death hit the world, a post appeared on Maiden Alley Cinema’s forum.
The user, Kenneth Smith, said, “With the unfortunate passing of this cinematic genius would there be any way to do an impromptu John Hughes marathon of sorts?”
This weekend, Kenneth Smith’s request comes to life. Maiden Alley Cinema in Paducah, Ky., is showing three of Hughes’ works: “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “The Breakfast Club,” and “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”
Danielle Hinton, freshman from Calvert City, Ky., said she plans on attending this weekend’s event. Her favorite of Hughes’ films is “The Breakfast Club.”
“A lot of his movies (feature) this kind of teenage ideal,” Hinton said. “(They) appeal to teenagers more because these are the things that actually happen, like kids goofing off in detention.”
Hinton said she had studied film history just prior to Hughes’ death so the loss affected her more than other celebrity deaths this summer.
“I definitely think (the film industry) has lost an important person,” Hinton said.
The tribute is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $7 per show or $15 for all three films. For individual showtimes check out maidenalleycinema.com.
