Friday involved student artwork, free food and an overall good time for those interested in art.
The first “Fine Art Friday,” hosted by the Organization of Murray Art Students, was held at faculty member Robert Giese’s house. It was open to the general public.
Though art students from every class have the opportunity to show off their work, 12 artists, including two faculty members, displayed about 24 pieces in total.
Sam Howard, freshman from Owensboro, Ky., had the chance to share some of his latest pieces. Howard said though art has always been a part of his life, this was his first time displaying his art in a show.
“I have loved (art) since I was young and just didn’t want to give it up in college,” Howard said.
Some of the mediums in the show included drawings, oil paintings, sculptures and photographs.
Stacey Reason, senior from Gilbertsville, Ky., also displayed work in the show. She said her favorite mediums to work with are photography and drawing.
“For photo, I like the way it forces me as an artist to analyze the world around me in a conceptual and creative way,” Reason said. “It is also growing and expanding and is an exciting thing to be a part of.
“Drawing offers an immediate reaction that I am drawn to. It is also the least technical medium, generally speaking. You can make a drawing on almost anything, using almost anything, and that freedom is really enticing for me.”
If you missed this show, OMAS has more events throughout the year. They have three galleries on campus and rotate shows. Although Fine Art Friday will not be held every Friday, they do plan on hosting more.
“We are planning on having a few more throughout the year to promote student art throughout the department and University,” Reason said.
The next gallery can be anticipated within the next two months, she said, though no date has been set.
Fliers will be posted closer to the event.
